February Newsletter
Dear Faith Family,
As we look forward to February as a month when we celebrate love and remember how Jesus has shown us the true standard of what it means to love unconditionally, I pray that we also remember that love comes from God and we will honor Him in the way we express love in and through our lives!
I remember hearing a Christian song in my early years as a Christian that declared, “We need to get back to the basics of life” and thinking how true this statement was for Christians in 1993. A “little bit” of time has passed since and I am still being reminded of this great need even now. In Jesus’ statement to the church at Ephesus in Revelation 2, He declares they have lost their first love and warns them if they do not remember from where they have fallen, repent and return to their former deeds, He will remove His presence from among them. What a staggering statement! At the same time, what an act of grace to provide a warning that could prevent such a thing from happening!
In recent days I have been reminded of how precious it is for Believers to be in a right relationship with God and be able to enjoy all the things that this relationship affords us. At the same time, I wonder if we have lost the zeal of our first love. Have we allowed the extraordinary grace and love of God to become an ordinary expectation of our daily walk? Consider the words of a great hymn, ‘The Love of God”: Could we with ink the ocean fill, and were the skies of parchment made; were ev’ry stalk on earth a quill, and ev’ryone a scribe by trade; to write the love of God above would drain the ocean dry; nor could the scroll contain the whole, though stretched from sky to sky.
Jesus put into words the most basic principle of the Christian life: Love God and love others. If we can set our hearts to do this and do it for the glory of God, we will be positioned to also carry out the most basic mission of the body of Christ without wavering: Worship God and share Jesus, both of which must be motivated by love.
As I consider the needs of the world around us, almost 30 years after hearing the melodic words of “we need to get back to the basics of life”, I am convinced more than ever that the body of Christ - our FAITH Family, must place the highest priority on standing firm on the word of God as an expression of our love for Him and find a way to show the grace and love of God that we have received through Christ Jesus with those hurting and without hope that are all around us. This is our privilege and our calling.
Remember the words of our Lord in John 15:13: “Greater love has no man than this, that he would lay down his life for his friends.” It is time for us to lay down anything that distracts us from the relationship God desires to have with us or from being the people God created us to be in this generation. Don’t wait for other to make the first move. LOVE FIRST!
